Thandeka Mnguni is a multidisciplinary artist based in South Africa. Thandeka's work engages with the spatial practices and imaginaries embedded in the everyday idiosyncrasies of the peripheral territories of the city—within the South African context, these are townships.Through media that include sound collection, film, social objects, and performance, her design methods provoke alternate ways that space is derived, instructed, and appropriated through performance procedures. She is interested in the shifting boundaries between public and private in spaces where these lines are often blurred —particularly through sound and ritual.
Thandeka is the co-leader of architectural initiative Unit 26 and the co-founder of the architectural collective room19isaFactory.
