Profile

Maldita Vaina is a multi-disciplinary artist, facilitator, and DJ based in the Dominican Republic. They investigate sites of Black memory in Itabo-Boca de Nigua, creating counter-archives for both documentary and speculative investigations. Maldita’s long-term research project, “Sonata Cimarronxs”, establishes a collection of audio-visual performance works for forgotten, untold, and invisibilized Black, Afro-Indigenous, Trans, and Marika histories. By organizing thoughts and memories of others using music samples, videos, and photos, Maldita weaves alternative connections between experiences, re-mapping the absent chronology to create a plurality of other present-future narratives. They curate Chinola Club Cine Callejero, a weekly open-air cinema in Ciudad Nueva, and Alté Karibe, a platform that celebrates free expression through music.
