In collaboration with the Gihanga Institute of Contemporary Art (GICA), we present "Material Carriers of the City" on Friday, 17 July, at GICA Headquarters. "Material Carriers of the City" brings together the nine Cycle 5 Building Beyond Fellows, uniting diverse voices from across the African continent at the intersection of art, space, and community. Using the parable as an allegorical form, the Fellows show how artistic practice can help reimagine and strengthen public space, community, and urban life through material carriers.

Each speaker will share a material carrier of their practice. Using the parable as an interpretive method, the Fellows share the imaginaries, interventions, and processes through which their practices engage with the built environment. Their parables, grounded by their material carriers, trace the constellations of their practices, narrating the forms of displacement they respond to, while reconfiguring new meaning and context. With this, they create a space that holds contradiction, intimacy, speculation and imagination.

This programme provides a peek into the wider world of Building Beyond, where architecture, design, photography, sound, and performance are in continuous conversation with one another. It is a platform where Fellows engage to hold space for public life, community, and creativity, converging in response to narratives of urbanism and spatial development.
