Profile

Sheila Nakitende is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher based in Uganda. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Fine Art and Design from Makerere University. Sheila experimented with painting before exploring installation, performance and sculpture. Sheila’s current practice focuses on womanhood, especially on experiences that include nurturing, preserving aesthetics, material culture and methodological history while also addressing current influences, challenges and transformations. She works with traditional techniques such as weaving, ceramics, ornamentation and workmanship, and her artistic experience ranges from concept development, product and graphics to gallery curatorial practice, coordinating arts projects, participating in local and international art workshops, residencies and exhibitions.

Sheila is a recipient of the Parent Residency grant at Women’s Studio Workshop in New York. Her solo exhibitions include “ABAANA Ba KINTU” at Makerere University Chemistry Laboratory Kampala in 2022, “TROPIKA” at Women’s Studio Workshop New York in 2017 and “40 TWISTS” at @rtpunch Studio Kampala in 2013. She participated in the Kampala Art Biennale and Kampala Art Auction 2016, and has exhibited internationally in Kenya, Congo, Zambia, Namibia, South Africa, Belgium, Austria, and USA.
