Paulin Jidenu Hountondji (1942-2024) was a philosopher, politician, and academic based in Benin. Considered a giant in the field of African philosophy, he was professor of Philosophy at the National University of Bénin. His contributions alongside the works of the late philosophers Kwesi Wiredu, Kwame Gyekye, and Henry Odera Oruka gave meaning and depth to the key debates that were happening among Africans who engaged in elaborating the question of philosophy in Africa.His influential book "African Philosophy: Myth and Reality" critically examines the history and development of African philosophy, debunking misconceptions and advocating for a rigorous, contextually grounded approach. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Professor Hountondji held roles as the Minister of Education from 1990-1991 and then as Minister for Culture and Communications from 1991-1993.
