Mickey Lai is an emerging filmmaker based in Malaysia. Growing up in a multiracial and religiously diverse society has deeply shaped her practice, which examines how institutional structures such as family, religion, education, and the state shape bodies, choices, and silence.
She holds an MA in Film and TV Production from MetFilm School, London. Her short films include “The Cloud Is Still There” (2020), “A Worm, Whatever Will Be, Will Be” (2022), and “WAShhh” (2024), which won the Golden Leopard for Best International Short Film at the 77th Locarno Film Festival. Her work has screened at international festivals including Clermont-Ferrand, Golden Horse, Busan, Red Sea, and Interfilm Berlin. She is the directing fellow for Golden Horse Film Academy 2024 and Locarno Spring Academy 2025.
