Profile

Julio Serrano Echeverría is a writer, poet, journalist, filmmaker, and multidisciplinary artist based in Guatemala. Much of his work explores Mayan, Mestizo and Afro cultures as part of his own identity. Julio is the co-founder and creative coordinator of Ocote, an interdisciplinary Guatemalan digital media outlet where journalism enters in dialogue with the arts to grapple with, among other subjects, historical memory, environmental ambiental justice, and women’s and LGBTIQ+ rights.

In 2022, Julio received the Gabo Award for his work with Ocote, the most important prize in Latin American journalism. For his poetry and artistic work, he has been awarded fellowships at Fundación Carolina in Spain, the Spanish-American Artist Residence FONCA-AECID in Mexico, Fundación YAXS in Guatemala City, and at the University of Colorado Springs in the US. His books of poetry have been published in Central and South America, Spain, and the United States, his work being translated into English, French, Bengali and the Mayan languages, Q´eqchí, K´iche’, and Kaqchikel.
