Jaime Ruíz is an artist and cultural organizer based in Mexico. Jaime is the co-founder of Lugar Común (2011–present), a social laboratory dedicated to the collective production of public space in response to regional divisions caused by forced rural-to-urban migration. He is grounded in the principles of Comunalidad (Communality), a social theory-way of life by Indigenous writer Jaime Martinez Luna that promotes gift-giving (tequio), care of nature sources (naturalotría), and assembly as a collective authority. Jaime's practice employs relational creation and experimental pedagogies to examine power structures, discrimination, colonial legacies, and migrant subjectivities, informed by his Chontal heritage and lived experience of displacement.
He has participated in major international exhibitions and residencies, including the 15th FEMSA Biennial (2024), Asia Art Archive (2023), and documenta 15 (2022). From 2019 to 2024, he led the Education Department at Museo Tamayo, developing inclusive programs and, through Lugar Común, initiating community-based projects that challenge individual authorship and promote collective learning and self-management.
