Profile

Andrei van Wyk is a sound artist and composer based in South Africa. His work explores concepts of identity, dispossession, and sonic isolation historiography through the practices of soundscape construction and musical experimentalism. As a researcher, he focuses on how the creative process of soundscape creation and synthesis can open up new ways of reading reconstructed narratives of the past.

As a musician and composer, Andrei has been a frequent collaborator with artist and researcher Simon Gush in his exhibitions. He also scored the SAFTA award-winning “Lobola: A Bride’s True Price?” in 2021. An active member of Johannesburg’s noise and experimental music scene, he has collaborated with Tumi Mogorosi and Gabi Motuba as The Wretched, and has performed as a guitarist for Desire Marea.
