Abdessamad El Montassir is an artist and researcher based in Morocco. Abdessamad's interdisciplinary practice lies at the intersection of art and science. Working with photography, sound, and film installations, he explores how trauma and different forms of violence—experienced, transmitted, or anticipated—become embodied in bodies and landscapes.
His work often investigates the narratives of non-human desert entities, such as plants, mountains, and geological formations, to reflect on the transmission of histories and trauma within complex geopolitical contexts. Collaboration is central to his practice, involving poets from his region as well as researchers, artists, laboratories, and institutions.
Abdessamad's work has been presented internationally in exhibitions, residencies, screenings, and conferences, including at the Smith College Museum of Art (Northampton), Le BAL (Paris), Villa Medici (Rome), Bétonsalon (Paris), Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart), Centre Pompidou-Metz, the National Museum of the History of Immigration (Paris), ifa Gallery (Berlin), Villa Empain (Brussels), The Mosaic Rooms (London), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), and Frac Franche-Comté (Besançon).
