Zanele Muholi is a visual activist based in South Africa. They have dedicated their career to documenting the lives of South Africa’s LGBTQIA+ community, focusing on the themes of identity, race, and resistance in post-apartheid society. Muholi’s impactful work spans photography, video, and installation, and is renowned for its intimate portrayal of black lesbian, gay, transgender, and intersex individuals.Key projects include "Faces and Phases", a series of portrait photographs that celebrate and bring visibility to marginalized communities, and "Brave Beauties", which showcases the vibrancy and defiance of transgender women. Their work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Tate Modern, London, and The Brooklyn Museum, New York. Muholi studied Advanced Photography at the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg and Fine Arts at Ryerson University, Toronto. They continue to use their art as a tool for activism, advocating for the recognition and protection of LGBTQIA+ rights in South Africa and around the world.
