Profile

Ferreira Gullar (1930-2016) was a multifaceted artist based in Brazil. Renowned for his contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, art critic, and television writer, his work, particularly in poetry and art criticism, has left an impact on Brazilian culture. Gullar was a pivotal figure in the Neo-Concrete Movement, which he helped establish in 1959. This movement was instrumental in pushing the boundaries of concrete art, introducing innovations such as the "poema-objeto" (object poem) and the "livro-poema" (poem-book), which invited interactive engagement from the reader, thus integrating physical experience with artistic expression. Among his notable works are "Poema sujo" (Dirty Poem) and "A luta corporal" (The Body Fight), which have been celebrated both in Brazil and internationally. Despite facing political persecution and exile, Gullar's work remained deeply connected to Brazilian culture, social issues, and the human condition, making him one of the most influential Brazilian intellectuals of the 20th century.
