Profile
Rohit Varekar is a visual artist based in India. His practice is rooted in the cultural and ecological landscape of Konkan, where traditional mud houses, wooden architecture, and craft-based livelihoods are increasingly vulnerable to urbanisation and environmental change. Working through site-specific installation, sculpture, video, and photography, he uses fallen wood, collapsed mud, and domestic fragments as living archives of memory, labour, and ecology.
Varekar draws on a family background in clay Ganpati idol-making and on the wooden toy traditions of Sawantwadi, approaching craft as a form of lived knowledge. Based in Maharashtra, he works close to the material cultures he documents, and his work explores how cultural identity and material knowledge persist amid social and environmental transformation.
