Profile
Nay Mendl is a trans filmmaker based in Brazil. Their path is written in body, time, and memory, and their films confront invisibility by transforming the favela, trans experiences, and Latin American memory into cinema that belongs to them. Mendl comes from the favelas of São Paulo.
They hold a Film degree from the University for Latin American Integration, with a specialisation at the National University of Colombia, and studied Directing at EICTV, the International School of Film in Cuba. A member of Berlinale Talents and APTA (Association of Trans Professionals in Film), they co-founded Maloka Filmes, a community-based film collective, and the Perifericu Festival of Cinema and Favela Culture. Their films have screened internationally and earned nominations for the BAFTA Student Awards and the Brazilian Academy of Cinema Award.
