Profile
Marcela Araya is a visual artist and researcher based in Costa Rica. Her practice centres on community art and non-formal art education, developed through participatory research with communities in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Colombia, alongside published texts on the same questions.
She holds a degree in Visual Arts from the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, a degree in Advertising Design from the Universidad de Costa Rica, and a diploma in Governance and Public Innovation from FLACSO. Awards include the Beca El Flotador in 2019, an honourable mention at BANCARTE in 2020, and the Premio del Salón Nacional in 2023. Exhibitions have followed in Costa Rica, Central America, the Caribbean, Moscow, Canada, Ibiza, and Germany, with residencies at Despacio, Rapaces Género, Plataforma Caníbal, and Cero Uno.
