Profile

Leonel Vásquez is a sound and plastic artist based in Colombia. Leonel’s work materialises in sculptures, installations, and performances. Throughout his artistic practice, Leonel explores ways to expand the act of listening as a political, aesthetic, recomposing action, and as a medium to rebuild bonds in contexts of social and environmental conflict. He is interested in the limits of human listening, the power of new sound environments, forms of fixation and sound memory, the mechanical vibration of sound, and listening in liquid media.

As a researcher and cultural producer, Leonel has worked on for projects carried out in collaboration with the National Radio of Colombia, the National Centre for Historical Memory, and the Colombian Ministry of Culture, among others. His artworks have been exhibited in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá, the Miguel Urrutia Art Museum (Central Bank of Colombia), the National Museum of Colombia, the Modern Art Museum of Medellín, the Antioquia Museum, the Centre for Memory, Peace and Reconciliation, the Museum of Water, and the Chamber of Commerce of Bogotá, among others. He currently works as sound art professor at the Art Department of the University of The Andes in Bogotá.
