Profile

Lara Sousa is a multidisciplinary artist based in Mozambique. Her work is interested in themes such as collective memory, cultural heritage, and processes of colonization and decolonization. She works across cinema, visual arts, and installation, with a particular interest in the Indian Ocean and in acts of remembering, memory, and archives.

Sousa has been selected for several arts residencies, among them Lapa Goethe Institute South Africa, Cité des Arts La Reunion, and Colab Now Now. The short films she has directed and made have won awards and been shown at festivals such as FESPACO, DAKAR 2022, and MAM Rio. Her recent co-directed feature documentary "We, People from the Islands", funded by the HotDocs Blue Ice Fund, premiered at Indie Lisboa in 2025.
