Profile
Fred Cayetano is a filmmaker and poet based in Mexico. They were born in the State of México, into a family that had recently migrated from a mazahua community, and from an early age they chose to put that community first. Cayetano works across film, poetry, and other art forms.
In 2022 Cayetano became the first mazahua person to win a prize to make a film, dueto charanda, which is celebrated across the mazahua-otomi region. More recently, Cayetano won the prize for young poetry awarded by UNAM, the largest university in Mexico, and was the first Indigenous person to receive it. The work continues to place mazahua language, memory, and community at its centre.
