Profile

Davi Pontes is a choreographer and teacher based in Brazil. As a practitioner of Black culture in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, he fosters discussions on racial justice, social justice, and representation. His practice has developed through classes, performances, and collaborative research that seeks to connect theoretical reflection with embodied movement.

Davi runs the Self-Defense Repertory School, a programme that combines dance, choreography, and social issues to promote critical reflection. His work has been presented at events such as the 35th São Paulo Biennial – Choreographies of the Impossible, the Sesc Dance Biennial, MITsp, the Panorama Festival, and the 38th Panorama of Brazilian Art at MAM-SP. He holds a degree in Arts and a Master's degree in Contemporary Art Studies from the Universidade Federal Fluminense. In 2022, he was awarded the ImPulsTanz Young Choreographers Award.
