Profile

Bahia Shehab is a multidisciplinary artist and historian based in the United States. Her work, which spans the fields of art, design, and activism, deeply explores themes of identity and resistance. Shehab gained international acclaim for her project "A Thousand Times No," which recontextualizes a historical Arabic script phrase to challenge oppression and injustice. Her impactful art has been exhibited globally, including at the Istanbul Design Biennial and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.Shehab's contributions extend into education as a professor of design and founder of the graphic design program at the American University in Cairo. Her work not only preserves and revives Arabic script calligraphy but also mobilizes it as a voice of public advocacy and social change. Through her innovative use of ancient cultural symbols in contemporary contexts, Shehab creates a dialogue that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries, making a profound impact on both local and international levels.
