Announcement

The Prince Claus Fund is proud to announce that we received €1.5 million contribution from the National Postcode Lottery to establish the Artist Emergency Fund.

With this capital, we can now establish the Artist Emergency Fund which will provide urgent assistance to artists from the global Prince Claus Fund network facing oppression, war, and natural disasters. The Artist Emergency Fund will ensure that artists can continue their vital work under even the most challenging circumstances.

The Prince Claus Fund Executive Director, Marcus Desando highlights the impact that the new Fund will have on artists, stating that:

"Beyond immediate financial aid, the Fund will also invest in long-term solutions. We will be developing a toolkit to share knowledge, foster an international support network, and work to enhance the resilience of artists and their communities."

Artists play a crucial role in defending freedom, justice, and equality. In times of crisis, their creative expression becomes a powerful tool against oppression and injustice. Yet, traditional humanitarian aid often overlooks the importance of protecting artistic freedom. The Artist Emergency Fund addresses this gap by offering rapid financial support and protection to the Prince Claus Fund Awardees facing risks, helping them to sustain their practice and resilience.

This initiative will ensure that, even in times of crisis, artists can continue to inspire, illuminate complex realities, and advocate for a more just and inclusive world.

Jonne Arnoldussen, Managing Director of the Postcode Lottery, emphasizes the Fund’s significance, asserting that:

"Art and culture are essential to the well-being of communities, especially in times of crisis. We are proud that, thanks to our participants, we can support the Prince Claus Fund in its commitment to artists facing oppression, war, and natural disasters. The Artist Emergency Fund will be a crucial lifeline for preserving cultural expression worldwide."

The support of the National Postcode Lottery for the past 25 years has been essential for the successful continuation of the Prince Claus Fund work, and we are excited to have the longstanding partnership exist to this day. With the indispensable support of the National Postcode Lottery, the Prince Claus Fund is committed to safeguarding artistic freedom and strengthening creative resilience where it is needed most.

More information about the programme will be announced in the coming months.
