Profile
Maria Matiashova is an interdisciplinary artist based in Ukraine. Her practice is marked by simple yet expressive gestures, through which she explores social relations, institutions, cultural memory, and language. Her work addresses the wounds of war, decolonisation, and critiques the effectiveness of international law. Guided by the principle that 'the medium is the message', Maria works across various forms, including performance, text, video, objects, and installation.
Maria explores participatory practices that take the form of games or build on existing ones. She presented the group performance "Rules of the Game", developed through the lens of Ukrainian children's war games. Her board game "Svitodil" invites audiences to reflect on how systemic power outages — caused by Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure — have disrupted and reshaped everyday life.
