Profile

Index of Censorship is a nonprofit organization founded by Stephen Spender and based in the United Kingdom. It promotes and defends the right to freedom of expression worldwide. Established in 1972, it has become a platform for challenging censorship and advocating for free speech through its award-winning magazine, campaigns, and its involvement in international advocacy. The organization focuses on themes such as the impact of censorship on culture, politics, and the media, and it supports writers, journalists, artists, and activists from across the globe who write about free expression.Index of Censorship has been bringing international attention to cases of censorship and threats to free expression, showcasing the work of censored voices through its publications, events and lately, the Censorship Freedom of Expression Awards that celebrate those who have had significant impact fighting censorship anywhere in the world. In 2018, Index publishes in their magazine the poems smuggled out of jail written by Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, an Iranian-British national who was imprisoned in 2015, helping Nazanin with her morale and being paid for her work. In 2020, Index celebrated the 20th year of their awards with an online ceremony hosted by BBC journalist Timandra Harkness.
