Profile

Cildo Meireles is an installation and conceptual artist based in Brazil. Meireles is known for his politically-charged conceptual artworks that critique consumer culture, systems of power, and Brazil's military dictatorship.Meireles first gained attention in the late 1960s with his "Insertions into Ideological Circuits" series, in which he imprinted political messages onto Coca-Cola bottles and banknotes and put them back into circulation. Through these subversive actions, Meireles aimed to interrupt the everyday flow of consumer goods and currency with countercultural ideas. Exhibited widely in major museums and biennials around the world, Meireles represented Brazil at the Venice Biennale in 1993. His works offer poetic yet radical critiques of systems of control and oppression, inviting viewers to reflect on their own positions within these structures.
