Profile

Afreen Akhtar is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and activist based in India. Afreen seeks to promote awareness about social issues, especially those related to womxn, marginalised groups, child sexual abuse, and queer identity. She does so mainly through discourse and dialogue. Afreen has performed as a storyteller on various stages, including TEDx Gateway, UN Women, The Wire, Team Works Art, and more. Her work has been published in Vogue India, and her translations of Parveen Shakir's poetry have appeared in Gulmohur Quarterly. Afreen was selected as one of the four artists at TRANSMITTERANCE 2021, Drishti Media's fellowship for community radio artists. She is also the founder of an online gender-fluid thrift store, Ismat Store, which promotes sustainable and environmentally conscious fashion.
