Profile

Film Resource Unit (FRU) was an independent film distributor based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Over the years, it evolved into a global distributor of African films while aiming to foster appreciation for African-origin cinema within South Africa. Notably, during the apartheid era, FRU courageously showcased films prohibited by the white authorities, contributing to cultural resistance and dialogue.Beyond distribution, FRU served a societal role by engaging in audience development initiatives. It conducted screenings and workshops in underserved areas, addressing pressing social issues such as domestic violence, HIV, and AIDS. The organization's Video Resource Centers offered access to films and facilitate community engagement. Additionally, FRU initiated a marketing and film training program for unemployed South Africans, providing a platform for their creative expression. However, despite its remarkable contributions, the organization faced financial challenges, leading to insolvency in 2007 and eventual closure in 2008.
