Nuraini focuses on modes of vernacular archiving and community-based pedagogies as the important sites for caring in a self-organised manner. She explores theorising from below and community-based research methodologies as a generative tool to address and confront violent historical legacies in the narratives of knowledge production.
In 1999, Nuraini co-founded Kunci Study Forum & Collective in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. During its first decade, Kunci contributed to reclaim various cracks in the public discourse in post-New Order Indonesia by publishing Newsletter Kunci, a mailing list, and organising community history projects. Since 2016, Kunci has established the long-term project School of Improper Education.
Nuraini develops Domestic Notes, a publication-based project that takes domestic and migrant spaces as sites to discuss everyday politics, the organisation of makeshift support systems, and women archives. With her family, she runs Reading Sideways Press, a small publisher on contemporary art, sports culture, sound making, children and teen literatures. Nuraini is the author of "Commons Museums: Pedagogy for Taking Ownership of What is Lost" (ICI Berlin Press, 2024), and "Stories of Wounds and Wonder " (If I Can't Dance, 2024).
